Artists Books at the Corcoran Library

The Corcoran Library collects artists’ books in support of the curriculum at the Corcoran College of Art + Design.

The collection of more than 200 works focuses on pieces with a social consciousness.

We select a broad range of techniques and materials to make the collection a valuable teaching tool for all students at the Corcoran College of Art +Design.

About this guide

This guide will help you find information at the Corcoran Library on Artists Books ad Books as Art objects.

Artists' Books are unique in "that instead of being about art they're rather books which are intended as artworks themselves." They seek to expand the traditional notion of a book by manipulating its basic characteristics in format, content and purpose. In the creation of a book, artists control the viewing experience by examining sequence, visual and written language, autonomy, medium, distribution, construction, volume, and relationship to the audience.

The books, online databases, periodicals, and websites listed are meant only as starting points for your research, as the Library contains many other resources on the subject.  If you have any questions, please ask a Library staff member for assistance.
